Mt. Lassen itself is quiet for now. Green pastures and still waters long Highway 89 just north of the national park lies a beautiful green valley, and a river runs through it. Just 20 feet wide in places and tranquil as a pond, Hat Creek attracts thousands of fly-fishers L fly fish] each season and [ yields brown, brook, and native rainbow trout up to 20 inches in length. The fishing season lasts from late April to November 15, and while most visitors to the valley come, fish, and go, others stay for good. Pam and Stephen Sweet traveled from Fredericksburg, Texas, three years ago to the nearby town of Burney to visit relatives. Impressed by the simple beauty of the forests surrounding the town of 5,000, they moved in. “But sometimes,” says Pam, “we just tell people that this is where the truck broke down.” That Burney had no barbecue shack was plain absurdity for the homegrown Texans, so they opened their own, and today Texas Backyard Barbecue on the south side of Highway 299 treats the community to slow-cooked Texas-style beef and pork, so tender it rivals the consistency of trout. Alicia and I stop at McArthur– Burney Falls Memorial State Park, where a 129-foot waterfall plunges from a lavarock precipice. At the edge of the large pool below, mist whirls upward from the crashing volumes of water, cooling the hot afternoon air and dampening the surrounding cliff walls and moss-green boulder piles. Twenty-five miles farther northwest on Highway 89, Falls of the McCloud, a series of three dramatic cascades along the McCloud River, is even better.
