Upstate Medical University
SUNY Upstate Medical University consists of four colleges that educate health professionals. The Colleges of Nursing and Health Professions are upper-division transfer and graduate colleges open to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students. High school seniors may apply for early admission to most programs. The Colleges of Health Professions and Nursing offer bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as a doctor of physical therapy and a physician assistant program. Health professionals are in high demand nationwide. Nearly all Upstate students are offered employment prior to graduation. Some programs have direct patient contact and others are lab-based, with little or no patient contact. Small classes allow for individual attention—and students grow close to each other and the faculty. Syracuse is a vibrant college town and Upstate offers 40 student organizations, intramural sports and activities for every interest.

College of Optometry
The College of Optometry offers professional and graduate degrees in the areas of optometry and vision science. The Doctor of Optometry (OD) is a four-year professional program, after undergraduate school. Students entering the OD Program generally have majored in the natural sciences at the undergraduate level. Accelerated acceptance is available by matriculating at selected undergraduate colleges. Doctors of Optometry are considered the primary providers of visual and ocular care, providing treatment for ocular diseases, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, and treating patients with a variety of conditions that affect the patient's ability to function effectively in their daily lives. The PhD program in vision science is a research degree emphasizing the structure and processes of vision. A bachelor of science in the sciences is recommended for admission. The classrooms, laboratories, library, and the patient clinics, which serve 70,000+ patients annually, are located in a historic 18-story building in mid-town Manhattan.
