Women in Tune with Technology T his year’s conference theme, “Women in Tune with Technology,” resonates in both the programming of the events for these golden October days, and in the editorial content of this issue. During the conference, the keynote address, plenaries, panels, and a multitude of sessions will address matters of importance to women engineers and engineering students. The materials and ideas are designed to tap the creativity and problem-solving skills essential to good engineering, and essential to technological, as well as personal, breakthroughs. In addition to the feature stories, columns, and departments that are a customary part of the magazine, we announce this year’s award recipients, provide an overview of each day’s schedule, and a detailed list of daily events and sessions. Tabs divide each section of the conference program, so you can quickly navigate your way through each day. For easy reference, a tab also marks the awards section. With Nashville as the host city, there is no more appropriate venue than this, the music capitol of the U.S., to read and reflect on the ways technology is changing and redefining all aspects of music. Charlotte Thomas’ article, “The Music of Technology,” on page 22, will inform and perhaps challenge some of your assumptions about one of the most basic human experiences — the creation and enjoyment of music. Technology encompasses aesthetics and also addresses a key concern of the moment — sustainability. See Sandra Guy’s article on page 32, “Going Green in Tennessee” to learn about efforts in the Nashville area and the rest of Tennessee to address a complex set of issues and concerns.
