As she expertly draws the bow across the strings, rich music flows about the room. Closely monitoring each precise change in how her hand manipulates the bow, the speed with which she pulls and pushes it, and the weight she exerts on the strings, a gesture-sensing system wirelessly notes the data detailing exactly how this musician produces the sounds she wants. 22 SWE CONFERENCE 2007 T hough Diana Young’s postdoctoral research at MIT’s Media Lab focuses on traditional violin bowing technique, her purpose could greatly affect the future for both violinists and music teachers. With her gesture-sensing system for the Hyperbow, she is studying how expert violinists play. “Many types of bow-strokes sound similar to each other but are executed differently. There is a very complicated interaction between the bow and string,” she explains. Researchers have not fully investigated how to capture the physical bowing technique of violinists as they play because of the difficulty in building a measurement apparatus that closely parallels a traditional bow.
