Topics of interest may include: career development issues; emerging technologies; unusual applications of engineering; innovative career guidance techniques; family issues; diversity issues; history of women engineers and scientists; profiles of prominent women engineers, and many other topics. SWE also welcomes submissions for regularly published columns in the following departments: Book Reviews; Point of View; Career Toolbox. All articles are subject to review by the SWE Editorial Board. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. Unsolicited articles are sent on the basis of speculation. Such articles will be accepted based on fit with themes and appropriateness of subject, as well as quality of writing. Complete author guidelines available on the SWE Web site, shown below, or by calling Society of Women Engineers at the above phone number. Article submissions may be sent via e-mail or regular mail to the editor at the above address. Interested in Engineering World? News items for this section should be sent directly to Anne Perusek, editor in text or word format. Photos are desired but should be limited to two per item and submitted electronically at 300dpi. News items are welcome covering new developments in engineering technology, news from engineering schools, professional societies, general news and statistics on women’s issues, engineering-related events of major significance, and awards, promotions, and other high profile honors received by women engineers. Running on Sunlight and Water his issue’s cover story looks at some of the promising and intriguing research on alternative fuels underway in university labs. While public consensus on the need to replace petroleum-based fuels may appear to be recent and still debatable, researchers have been exploring options for decades. And at least some research appears poised for widespread application within the next 10 years, as recent breakthroughs in solar energy research indicate. Yet no single source or technology will supply the answer to energy consumption or the means to transition from our petroleumbased economy. The search for sustainable energy has been compared to the space race and the nuclear arms race — capable of transforming society and defining the spirit of a new age. For a glimpse of the scope of possibilities, turn to page 38. As is customary in our fall issue, the backto-school theme is reinforced throughout. Articles range from an interview with women engineering deans from distinctly different institutions — the seventh such interview in our annual series — to the voices and experiences of collegiate members and recent graduates. To meet the engineering deans from Florida Gulf Coast University, Washington State University, and Rice University, see Peggy Layne’s article, ”Women Engineering Leaders in Academe 2008,” on page 48. A few pages later, on 56, read up on Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) and the efforts of New Mexico State University to increase the number of women and Hispanic engineering graduates. Offering the collegiate perspective, the SWE section at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign writes about their ambitious history project and encourages other sections to do the same in, “Your Collegiate Section History is Waiting to Be Discovered,” on page 62. New graduate Bethany Peterson’s Point of View on page 84 is a reminder that the SWE experience supports all stages of one’s engineering career. Recent graduate and editorial board member Bianca McCartt tells how her co-op and volunteer experience made all the difference in her job search. Now that she is on the other side of the desk interviewing prospective co-ops, she offers advice on understanding and communicating the value of these experiences. See the Career Toolbox on page 86. The sixth and final installment in the series analyzing data from SWE’s retention study examines engineering retention and gender across disciplines. Turn to page 26 for a fascinating discussion.
