Perusek, Director of Editorial and Publications ponsored by Communications Concepts Inc., the APEX Competition is in its 20th year and covers a broad array of communications. Awards are given to communications professionals in print and electronic media to recognize outstanding work in categories ranging from magazines and newsletters to annual reports, marketing campaigns, brochures, video, and Web sites. This year’s competition included nearly 5,000 entries from North America and abroad. The panel of judges noted that this year’s entries “ displayed an extraordinary level of quality,” presenting the judges with the difficult task of selecting the awardwinning entries. In addition, the judges often were “more impressed by the quality of creative ideas and concepts shown by entries than they were by the expense entailed in their execution.” S A total of 120 Grand Awards were presented in 11 major categories to honor the outstanding works in those categories, while 1,393 Awards of Excellence were presented in 110 subcategories. Of the areas in which SWE placed, there were 745 entries that fell under the general category of Writing, 504 under the category of Design & Illustration, and 837 under the category of Magazines & Journals. Of the 745 writing entries, 232 placed in subcategories ranging from Feature Writing to Editorial & Advocacy Writing to How-to Writing. In the area of Design & Illustration, there were 45 winning entries out of 504. Finally, the Magazines & Journals category was divided by number of printed pages. Of the 837 entries, 34 received Awards of Excellence for producing outstanding issues of 32 pages or fewer. Of entries of more than 32 pages, there were 70 Awards of Excellence.
