New Faces OF ENGINEERING Each year through the New Faces of Engineering program, the Engineers Week committee recognizes young engineers who have made a positive impact on the image of engineering. BY ANNMARIE CONNOR, SWE AWARDS AND RECOGNITION CHAIR T he New Faces of Engineering program is designed to enhance and improve the public perception of engineering by putting faces on what has often been referred to as “the stealth profession.” This program is also intended to promote incentives for college engineering students to explore their career options, as well as encourage high school students to study engineering in college. Candidates are selected from the EWeek sponsoring societies and societies that are members of the EWeek Diversity Council. SWE has participated in the New Faces program since its inception during EWeek 2003, and this year has joined the newly established EWeek Diversity Council. This year SWE selected five nominees based on submissions from local sections. In a departure from previous years, this year’s top SWE nominee will be competing with top nominees from other Diversity Council societies, and one will be selected and featured in USA Today, along with the top nominees from the sponsoring societies. SWE sections were asked to nominate one member less than 30 years of age for consideration. The selection committee was faced with the difficult task of choosing one top candidate from the many strong nominees. All of SWE’s nominees are featured in this article as well as on the SWE Web site. Liquids Group in ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing in Houston, Bellino uses the analytical and problem-solving skills from her engineering background to address commercial aspects in the oil, gas, and power industries. As a graduate student, she epitomized this role as a team logistics coordinator and outreach coordinator with The University of Akron in the Department of Energy Challenge X Competition. Bellino’s enthusiasm for engineering outreach stems back to her involvement as a project coordinator in the Women in Engineering program, as well as her multiple leadership roles within the Society of Women Engineers during her undergraduate and graduate careers at The University of Akron. She is the current membership chair for the Houston Area SWE Section. Jessica Flasche Project Engineer, Limited Brands Inc. Jessica Flasche is a supply chain engineering team member at Limited Brands in Columbus, Ohio, responsible for the development and execution of supply chain projects for the retailer. Flasche currently is supporting a new state-of-the-art distribution center for Victoria’s Secret Direct. This distribution center fulfills catalog and Internet orders from customers around the world. Flasche was part of the team that designed requirements, purchased millions of dollars of material handling equipment, and managed the implementation of control systems and software that run the distribution center for the growing business. In addition, she led M. Angelina Bellino Senior Negotiator, ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing M. Angelina Bellino is a graduate of The University of Akron, where she received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in engineering management. Bellino exemplifies the notion that one can “do anything with an engineering degree.” As a power negotiator for the Americas Power & Gas Services Group and former support analyst for the Americas Natural Gas 16 SWE WINTER 2008
