Visit one near you during February and throughout the year. I n late January 2006, on the eve of Black History Month, the Smithsonian Institution’s board of regents selected the site for its newest museum. The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established as an act of Congress in 2003. When it opens in 2015, it will be the fulfillment of a dream that began with black Civil War veterans, former slaves, and their children to have a national museum to honor black contributions to America. In 1915 the Civil War veterans and their supporters marched in Washington, D.C. to express this demand, and in 1929 the first legislation was passed to authorize it. The museum will be constructed on the National Mall. In November 2007 a team of architectural and design firms was chosen to conduct an 18-month study of the various needs and considerations for the museum. By spring 2009 the architect should be selected. While it will be a few more years before the national museum is open, there are many local and regional museums across the country dedicated to black history. Visit one near you, or during your travels, during Black History Month, and perhaps more importantly, throughout the year. The following list is not intended to be a comprehensive record of all African-American museums. — Editors The Tubman African American Museum is located in Macon, Ga. 46 SWE WINTER 2008 http://www.blackmuseums.org http://www.bcri.org http://www.oaklandlibrary.org/AAMLO http://www.caam.ca.gov http://fortmason.org/visualarts/index.shtml http://www.blackamericanwestmuseum.com http://anacostia.si.edu http://www.howard.edu/CollegeFineArts/gallery_final/galleryofart.html http://africa.si.edu http://www.broward.org/library/aarlcc.htm http://www.woodsonmuseum.org http://www.taltrust.org/blkarchv.htm http://www.mcaam.org http://www.tubmanmuseum.com http://www.ibhm.org http://www.aphiliprandolphmuseum.com http://www.dusablemuseum.org http://www.crispusattucksmuseum.ips.k12.in.us http://www.derbymuseum.org
