SWE - Winter 2008 - (Page 64) ENGINEERING WORLD tronics and the foundation for microchip and computer technology. 4. Invention of Glass — Approximately 2200 B.C., northwestern Iranians invented glass, which, following ceramics, became the second greatest nonmetallic engineering material. 5. Optical Microscopy — In 1668, Anton van Leeuwenhoek developed optical microscopy, capable of magnifications of 200 times and greater, enabling study of the world invisible to the human eye. 6. Modern Concrete — In 1755, John Smeaton invented modern concrete. 7. Crucible Steel Making — Around 300 B.C., metal workers in south India developed crucible steel making, producing “wootz” steel. 8. Cu Extraction and Casting — Approximately 5000 B.C., people in the region of modern Turkey discovered that liquid copper can be extracted from malachite and azurite and that the molten metal can be cast into different shapes. 9. X-ray Diffraction — In 1912, Max von Laue discovered the diffraction of X-rays by crystals, inspiring the theory of diffraction by crystals. 10. Bessemer Process — In 1856, Henry Bessemer patented a bottomblown acid process for melting lowcarbon iron, leading to the era of cheap, large tonnage steel, enabling massive progress in transportation, building construction, and general industrialization. Three Million Documents for the Asking Three million documents are at your fingertips, thanks to scitopia.org. On this Web site, simply enter a term in the search portal and you have access to the digital libraries of leading science and technology societies. Scitopia.org, a free, federated, search portal created by leading science and technology scholarly societies, recently launched its service following a beta release in June 2007. The beta site allowed users to test the site and provide feedback for improving the search portal. Since then, scitopia.org has refined the cross-file searching that occurs with multiple content partners and modified the interface based on user feedback. The result is a simple and flexible interface, capable of providing reliable retrievals from more than 3 million documents — primarily peer-reviewed journal content and conference proceedings — spanning more than 150 years of scholarship. Scitopia.org is a product of the imagination and collaboration of 15 leading science and technology societies: Acoustical Society of America; American Geophysical Union; American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; American Institute of Physics; American Physical Society; American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Mechanical Engineers; AVS; ECS; IEEE; Institute of Physics Publishing; Optical Society of America; Society of Automotive Engineers; Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; and SPIE. The truth is, one-third of all our hires are engineers— talented engineers—looking for exactly the same kind of day-to-day challenges and rewards that we know you are.
