Topics of interest may include: career development issues; emerging technologies; unusual applications of engineering; innovative career guidance techniques; family issues; diversity issues; history of women engineers and scientists; profiles of prominent women engineers, and many other topics. SWE also welcomes submissions for regularly published columns in the following departments: Book Reviews; Point of View; Career Toolbox. All articles are subject to review by the SWE Editorial Board. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. Unsolicited articles are sent on the basis of speculation. Such articles will be accepted based on fit with themes and appropriateness of subject, as well as quality of writing. Complete author guidelines available on the SWE Web site, shown below, or by calling Society of Women Engineers at the above phone number. Article submissions may be sent via e-mail or regular mail to the editor at the above address. Interested in Engineering World? News items for this section should be sent directly to Anne Perusek, editor in text or word format. Photos are desired but should be limited to two per item and submitted electronically at 300dpi. News items are welcome covering new developments in engineering technology, news from engineering schools, professional societies, general news and statistics on women’s issues, engineering-related events of major significance, and awards, promotions, and other high profile honors received by women engineers. Sustaining Careers and Our Environment T he relationship between sustainability and engineering careers is explored in our cover article, “A Greener America = New Growth Fields for Engineers.” Notions of environmentalism and job growth have, at times, appeared to be mutually exclusive. In policy debates the two have often been framed as an oversimplified trade-off, implying a choice between either jobs and a healthy economy, or a cleaner environment and a greatly reduced standard of living. Perhaps the greater seriousness of current debates concerning global warming, climate change, and dwindling supplies of petroleum have helped create a new era with different attitudes. While the debates take place, advances in technology continue, making “green” practices even more attractive and practical and creating career opportunities for engineers. Turn to Sandra Guy’s article on page 28 to learn about new fields and the reshaping of such traditional areas as manufacturing. We look at another aspect of career development in Charlotte Thomas’ article, “The Off-On Ramp Revolution,” beginning on page 38. For years, conventional wisdom has said that interruptions in one’s career, such as taking time off to care for children or cutting back on hours or high-profile projects, were highly detrimental. Thomas’ article shows how flexible work options can keep talented women in the work force, creating a win/win situation for all concerned. The third installment of our series examining results from the SWE Retention Study asks: “Why do women leave the engineering work force?” For answers, turn to page 24, where Lisa Frehill, Ph.D., of the Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology, provides thoughtful analysis. I n honor of Black History Month we offer an overview of AfricanAmerican history museums across the country. Turn to page 46 to determine if there is a museum in your area or in the proximity of your travels. A visit to one or more of these museums at any time during the year would be a meaningful experience. As always, the winter issue includes a wrap-up from the national conference. We have attempted to capture, in words and images, both the spirit and substance of this event. Coverage begins on page 50 — enjoy!
