Have you given any thought to printing on lesserquality, recycled paper? Kindest regards, Lisa LeVasseur San Diego Section Response: FACULTY OPENINGS IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Purdue Engineering is expanding. We are building interdisciplinary communities of scholars and educators through strategic hiring practices, establishing research centers, and launching innovative educational initiatives. These communities will change the world. Through a multidisciplinary approach, we are addressing the biggest challenges facing humanity, with a commitment to make an engineering impact. We are continuing to build state-of-the-art facilities. Our latest, the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, is named for perhaps Purdue’s most famous alumnus and provides a northern gateway to Purdue and the College of Engineering (COE). In the last 5 years, we have attracted more than 145 new outstanding and diverse faculty members. Introduced in 2003, the COE’s signature areas reach across engineering’s traditional boundaries to connect existing strengths in addressing state, national, and global needs. The ten signature areas now include Advanced Materials and Manufacturing; Energy; Global Sustainable Industrial Systems; Healthcare Engineering; Information, Communications, and Sensing Systems, Intelligent Infrastructure Systems; Nanotechnologies and Nanophotonics; Perception-based Engineering; System of Systems; and Tissue and Cellular Engineering. The COE is also a key participant in the following interdisciplinary centers at Purdue. These centers include the Center for Advanced Manufacturing; the Bindley Bioscience Center; the Cyber Center; the E-Enterprise Center; the Energy Center; the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship; the Center for the Environment; the NEXTRANS USDOT University Transportation Center; Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering; the Discovery Learning Center; the Birck Nanotechnology Center; and the Oncological Sciences Center. We are looking for outstanding interdisciplinary faculty candidates who will contribute to our diversity! We appreciate your interest in this timely and important subject. There are a number of aspects that must be considered when a publisher makes the decision to “go green.” CONFERENCE 2008 ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: Women of Courage 2008 Conference Program Engineering’s Grand Challenges ASPIRE • ADVANCE • ACHIEVE MAGAZINE OF THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS Women Leading a Technical Revolution Baltimore, Maryland Annual Conference Issue Current Faculty Opportunities The priorities for faculty hiring during the 2008-09 academic year are in the areas of: ENERGY: Areas of interest are: all renewable energies including biomass, solar and wind, batteries, clean coal, nuclear; and issues related to energy production, distribution and use. Areas of interest are: Assistive Technology including the full range of diagnostic and treatment devices and protocols. HEALTHCARE ENGINEERING: PERCEPTION-BASED ENGINEERING: Areas of interest are: development of models for human perception, motion, and behavior in speech and hearing, haptics, kinesiology, and vision; and application of these models to the design of engineering systems that interact directly with humans. Example application areas include perceptive assistive technologies and medical decision making, vibration reduction, improved touch in manual controls, imaging systems, and acoustic environments. SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS: Areas of interest are: logistics and intermodal transportation, including intermodal freight logistics, dynamic supply chains, and electronic commerce and transportation. If you have a Ph.D. in engineering or a related discipline in one of these areas please submit your application online at: Like much of the publishing industry, we are looking at ways to incorporate more sustainable practices while at the same time confronting spiraling production costs, and maintain quality typical of our niche market. We will keep readers informed of any changes in paper, inks, and processes as we proceed. — Editors https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/AboutUs/Employment/ Applications.
