THE MILLION HOURS CAMPAIGN. Engineers devote an enormous amount of time as volunteers in outreach activities to educate young people about the engineering profession. EWeek organizers are challenging all engineers to take part in these efforts and to log their volunteer hours on a new Web site, http://million hours.djangodomain.com, in a collective effort to reach 1 million hours of outreach in science, technology, engineering, and math education. FUTURE CITY COMPETITION™. In this year’s National Engineers Week Future City Competition™, thousands of middle school students tackled the question of how to conserve and reuse water as our cities grow and expand. In the Future City element of EWeek, student teams work under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer to design and build a “city of tomorrow.” This year, the competition centers on creating a home system that minimizes the use of municipal or externally supplied water for its daily requirements. First-place winners from each of 40 regional competitions across the country receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 17th annual Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C., during EWeek. The national grand prize is a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. GLOBAL MARATHON FOR, BY AND ABOUT WOMEN IN ENGINEERING.
