Within the business area of Integrated Communications Systems, Markus has worked on strategic networked communications systems for military airborne and ground tactical intelligence and radio systems, systems integration, and also on migration of radio/intelligence systems to software communications architecture. Markus is completing her M.B.A. and is participating in a cross-functional rotation program, newly launched at Raytheon, to continue her growth in other areas of the business and prepare her as a future organizational leader. Additionally, Markus volunteers with children and encourages future female engineers. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, she helped organize and facilitate the Ms. Wizard Day of Discovery. And, in 2007, she represented Raytheon as a volunteer at the Expanding Your Horizons conference at Notre Dame to motivate young women in science and math. Currently, she volunteers as a tutor for Fort Wayne (Indiana) Community Schools. Markus received a 2008 Believe, Achieve, Inspire award from ITT Technical Institute in the area of electronics for being a high-achieving female role model in the community. Statement: As a lead senior paint process engineer for General Motors’ Pontiac Assembly Center, Jessica Mattis leads a team of engineers and resident suppliers in paint processing. Mattis attended a nine-month paint development program, and her initiative to gain practical knowledge from experienced engineers, tradesmen, and operators has made substantial quality and financial impacts for GM. Recently, she has been working with paint team members to perform noncyclical standardized work. She led a two-year project that made the plant the first to decommission a final bake oven with annual savings of approximately $750,000. Mattis collaborated with engineers to save more than $4.5 million by optimization of ovens/air hoses and annual $1-million-plus avoidance through material reductions. As plant paint lead to robotic experts, Mattis’ expertise was integral in the implementation of new sealer technology that led to the redeployment of 10 operators; and the use of a sound deadener instead of foam parts led to saving $2M+ annually. She championed the PAC contamination control team initiatives to reduce dirt counts in paint by 60 percent from 2005-2007. 18 SWE WINTER 2009
