The Pitch Pipe - October 2008 - (Page 26) quartet spotlight How We Spent Our Summer Vacation By Doreen Giesfeldt, BLUE PLATE SPECIAL “I promise, it’s two blocks at the most, maybe three but that’s it.” Lying to my quartet was easier than saying we probably would cover one to two miles by the time we were done with our stroll and singing along beautiful Lake Michigan, Milwaukee, Wis. Every year we do a volunteer project to let people know about our fantastic hobby and to support our community. This time we decided to do a stroll and sing, talk to people about Sweet Adelines and showcase our wonderful hometown. The vibrant sculpture of Mark di Suvero was our first stop on Wisconsin Avenue. This giant metal sculpture named “The Calling” is reminiscent of a beam of sunshine. We sang a couple of songs beneath its bright orange rays capturing the attention of people enjoying a Sunday brunch at the Coast restaurant. Our next stop was on the bridge leading to the Milwaukee Art Museum — a prominent cultural attraction. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it is a $100 million dollar wing of pure white marble with a distinctive sunscreen. The moving “brise soleil” opens to create the look of a soaring bird at the edge of the water. We had a chance to speak with a couple from Boston who stopped to listen. They said they took with them a new appreciation not only for the city of Milwaukee but for all the friendly people they had met. They were pleasantly surprised to be serenaded as they enjoyed their afternoon walk and were equally interested in hearing about women barbershoppers. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW WAARA 26 October 2008
