The Pitch Pipe - January 2009 - (Page 36) new music reviews By Lynnell Diamond, Toast of Tampa Show Chorus, Region 9 We have a brand new competitionsuitable uptune on offer for Young Women In Harmony for the beginning of the new year. CMA Marsha Zwicker has created a very entertaining arrangement of a popular old tune, Jeepers Creepers. Creative use of rhythm and embellishments make this a great choice for shows, as well. The arrangement is rated medium. For special occasions, Anna Maria Parker has created a very beautiful arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer, set to the traditional melody of Albert Mallotte. This adult arrangement is rated easy/medium, and is not suitable for competition. We welcome submissions for consideration for publication by Sweet Adelines International. Please send your arrangements to Suzanna Runyan at International for review by the Sales/Marketability Committee. To see a list of all Sweet Adelines published music, go to our Web site at sweetadelineintl.org. From the main menu, go to International Sales and then click “the new online shop.” Choose “Published Sheet Music” from the list in the bar on the left. You can also order a CD or printed copy of copyright-cleared arrangements that may be purchased either from SAI or directly from the arranger. (NOTE: “Cleared” indicates that copyright clearance has been granted for the arrangement; it does not indicate “approval” of the arrangement.) On the International Sales page, choose the first listing, “Contact International Arranged Music” for the list of available arrangements. You will also find a “YWIH” list on the International Sales page. Continued from page 10 your chorus brought in a champion quartet to show your audience the best of the best? Many times our queens find themselves in new quartets because they are not through singing and no one is hiring them for shows. Granted, some of the reality is that many quartets do not know how to entertain. The groups that can entertain the audience find themselves as busy as they want to be. The Coronet Club is trying to approach this from the inside, attempting to get our queens to real- ize that the crown and gold medal are not automatic invitations to perform on your shows. Since this question arose I have spoken to several queens. I’m told that the reality is, “queens know how to work.” I’m sure almost every member of every quartet out there believes they work hard at achieving that ultimate goal. Would you believe working hard is not what gets a quartet over the top. It’s working smart. It’s possible to work hard, very hard, in the wrong direction. Queens have achieved the goal and they know what it took. When it’s time to find a new quartet they are more likely to look for at least one other queen to work toward a new goal. If someone else in the group knows how to work, it reduces that “hit the ball, drag Bob” factor that could otherwise impact their success. The 2008 series of Queens’ Colleges shared with quartets in attendance everything queens know about winning the gold. Did you take advantage of that educational opportunity? It may never come again, but for sure it won’t come before 2012. 36 January 2009 The acceptance of advertisements by Sweet Adelines International does not necessarily signify endorsement of the products or services.
