Tacoma Visitors Guide 2009 - (Page 27) high vistas WITHOUT VISAS he great outdoors is affordable and fun to explore. And if you’re not used to getting down with nature, it could be comparable to foreign travel. Whether you’re an avid outdoors person who likes to reenact scenes from “Cliffhanger,” or you just like to take an easy walk down the street to admire the views [or shop], Pierce County is your type of place. When you look around, you’ll see a multitude of outdoor things to do. On a clear day, you’ll see Mount Rainier. The mountain offers everything an outdoor enthusiast could ever want. If you’re easy going, take a nature hike and observe the local flora and fauna. If you feel more adventurous, climb all the way to the top. Ski or snowboard at Crystal Mountain, or go fly-fishing in a peaceful stream. Visit the park for a day hike or camp out for a week. So many options! Experience wildlife at the only place in the Northwest to combine lions, tigers and sharks … oh my! Any mode of transportation is available for your adventure. Bike, hike, rollerblade, hot air balloon or take a leisurely stroll with the family pet. If walking is your style, even if it’s because you don’t want to work up a sweat, the possibilities are endless. Walking the 2.5 mile trail along the perimeter of Chambers Bay Golf Course provides spectacular views of the Puget Sound, as does the boardwalk on Ruston Way. Amble along on the Five-Mile Drive [yes, you can drive it too] in Point Defiance Park. Or, if you have other intents, you can even get out and explore the region’s downtown shopping.
