CARS Culture 2000 Chevrolet Corvette By Michael Fortuna Joe Lessard got bitten by the Corvette bug when he was 12 years old. His neighbor’s daughter’s boyfriend had a Chevrolet Corvette, and Lessard immediately fell in love with the car. He soon saved up enough money to get a 1970 Corvette LT1 convertible, and he’s owned several since that time. His sixth and current ride is a light pewter 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The Village of Santiago resident, along with his wife Ginny, helped to form the Village Vettes Corvette Club in 2005. In 2010, Lessard formed the Leisure Time Corvette Club, which he now runs. On March 30, the latter group will be holding a car show at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square. For more information about the Leisure Time Corvette Club, call Lessard at 750-9154. Cars & Q. Why did you start the Village Vettes? d y A: When we bought our second car, we didn’t : When we bough h hen oug ough g drive (th orvett ) drive (the Corvette) to drive (the Corvette) too much. I figured we should iv he et start club (for Corve start a cl (for Corve tar for rv f Corvettes). No one else had. Q. How long have you had the car? A: Eleven years. We bought it new from a dealer in Michigan. Q. What features does the car have? A: This car is the absolute basic. It does have a 345-horsepower, 350-cubic-inch V-8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard Corvette. The power steering, windows and brakes come standard. It has a cargo top, (which is) a lot easier to deal with. It gets 31 to 32 miles per gallon on the highway. It has an AM/FM/CD player and air conditioning. Starting with the C5 in 1997, they put in a huge amount of room in the rear end. There’s no spare tire, and it’s got two fuel tanks, one on either side so they wouldn’t put it in the back or underneath (the trunk area). It came with three accessories: fog lamps, floor mats, and a privacy shade for the rear. FEBRUARY 2012
