The Villages - March 2009 - (Page 17)

Committed to Competition by Theresa Campbell Tennis is a favorite sport among Villagers on the senior traveling league teams of the United States Tennis Association. Among the perks: playing in USTA matches against teams of the same caliber and ranking; improving your game and staying fit playing in a competitive environment; traveling to different communities for games; and meeting new friends and having a ball along the way. “I love the competitive aspect of it,” said Ellen Hoffman, of the Village of Rio Grande, and a member of the women’s 4.0 team. “A lot of people say, ‘I’ve played on USTA teams before,’ but I would encourage them to continue, because at our age, competing is a whole different thing. It’s a very satisfying feeling to know that you are still able to get out there and compete. You win some and you lose some, but you still get that adrenaline rush; the exercise is great; and the mental part is that you’re challenging your mind to do your very best.” MAGAZINE 37
