More than 50 years after the release of her
first album, Judy Collins is still going strong.
The singer-songwriter has had a prolific career,
including a Grammy Award for Best Folk
Performance in 1968, multiple songs on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart, an Academy Award
nomination and a plethora of admiration and
recognition for her social activism.
A true Renaissance woman at the age of 78,
Collins isn't slowing down anytime soon. She
performed Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" at the
Grammys, released an album with Stephen Stills
and published a book - and that was
all just in 2017.
We talked more with Collins about her
songwriting, her relationship with Stephen Stills
and what she'll be performing here in The Villages.

Q. What can we expect from "An Evening with
Judy Collins" on March 22?
A. You can expect me to tell some stories of my life -
the ups and downs, the ins and outs, the triumphs,
the dark times, the great times. Of course if I sing,
I'll be singing some songs from my current selection
of hits and songs that I've newly written or feel
strongly about.
Q. What's your songwriting process?
A. It has to be constant, because I have to keep
working at it to see what happens. At the moment,
I'm going through the year's writing from 2016
where I wrote a song every day - either a song or a
poem. Now I'm figuring out which is which.
I did three months of that kind of writing in 2017
and also I sort of continue to do it. But that was a
big year - I got a lot of things out of it. I got a lot of
songs out of it.
The process is to just keep at it. That's the process.
No mystery, no scientific answer - you do it every
day and then let it go.
Q. Where do you find your inspiration?
A. Oh, everywhere. I travel, of course. I have lots of
interests - art, music, what's going on in the world,
nature and so forth. Inspiration is everywhere
around you, you just have to look.
