in Training

Jane Rose raised her share of kids - more than 25 at
a time. But they were not the human sort. On a farm in
Ohio, Rose birthed, bathed, trimmed and bred Boer goats
for show.
"We are very proud of our kids," Rose said, flashing a
proud-parent grin.
A longtime lover of animals, Rose got into the goat
business in 2003, after she and her husband sold their
28-year-old business.
"My grandson Mike and granddaughter in-law
Amanda were very involved in 4-H, and they recommended Boer goats," she said. "We all went in business
together and named our farm Jam-Boer-e Farm."
Rose explained there are many types of goats, and
Boer are bred to be large - around 250 pounds. In
regard to intelligence and demeanor, they are very
similar to dogs. Rose forged a bond with her goats, even
bottle-feeding some. But goat farming is laborious, and it
got to be "too much for a great grandma," Rose said, so
they sold the goat business.
"I cried when they left the farm," she said.
In 2005, the Roses bought their Villages home
and made room for another animal - an adorable
Aussiedoodle.
"I'd wanted a puppy for 28 years," Rose said.
Free from the duties of farming, Rose plunged into
training the new member of the family.
"We started going to the flea markets every week,
events at the squares, craft shows and restaurants," she
said. "Abby has been to the San Antonio River Walk - in
her two years she has visited 21 states."
Rose attributes Abby's quiet demeanor to early
socialization, noting that being around people in various
environments has helped her become a calm, welladjusted canine.
"She is easy to train, and I have heard that Aussiedoodles are the Einsteins of dogs," she said. "I don't know if
that's true, but Abby is super intelligent."
But Abby is still in training, and Rose is preparing her
for a new role.
