The Villages - May 2008 - (Page 14) The story goes that Beto had forgotten his aerobics music for his class. Because it was too much of a challenge to improvise without music, he used Latin salsa and merengue music — the songs he loved. His idea was to combine his love of Latin salsa and merengue music with aerobics to make a more challenging exercise. Zumba became a success in Colombia, and Beto brought it to the United States in 1999. Sonja Browne, from the Village of Woodbury, described the class as “fast, intense and strenuous.” “When you leave here, you have a cramp and you are drenched,” she said. “It’s probably the best class offered here.” Sonja has been taking the class, along with boot camp and other exercises, to double her weight-loss results and stay in shape. “I took (Zumba) when they first had it a couple of months ago and I love it,” she said. “It’s so totally different from the boot camp. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s such a great exercise routine.” 14 MAY 2008 Sonja said she has to keep signing up for more sessions of Zumba because she loves it so much. “I wouldn’t sign up if I didn’t think it was good,” she said. “They are two different body functions. Boot camp works a different part of your body. It’s great for my golf because it’s building your upper body. Zumba is more of a cardio workout, and you’re building up your heart rate. It has that same salsa drumbeat.” Sonja said her classmates work hard at keeping up with Nadine, whom she considers a great instructor. “We do our best, considering we are not 19,” she said. “It keeps us in shape. You’re moving all parts of your body.” Nadine uses a headset microphone while teaching the class so she can move with the participants. They began with a routine called Kubia, which had hip and pelvic movements and moving of the arms, legs and a lot of catching the beat. It was a warm-up to the much faster-paced songs, but dancers were already perspiring and out of breath. “I need your attitude today, a lot of attitude,” said Nadine to her class. “Have fun with it. Loosen up and enjoy.” Each routine has both fast and slow movements that target the abdominal and gluteus muscles, legs, arms and, most importantly, the heart. There’s a lot of swaying, pointing your toes and hip rolls that help lose the inches.
