I just want to be competitive,” he said. “I know you can’t be the best in everything, but I like to be competitive and see if I can test the best.” The Senior Games offers many opportunities to be competitive. That is why Art loves the setup. “I am a good all-around sportsman. If it is a ball game, I’ll play,” Art said. “I just signed up to play in a cricket league.” Where Art played cricket, soccer and rugby in his early years, he now plays pickleball and golf and has added cricket again. He would love to add more sports, but admits time won’t allow too many new adventures. “I play golf and pickleball every other day,” he said. “There’s a time limit.” Art has competed in the Senior Games since he turned old enough. He and his wife bought a home in The Villages four years ago, but have twice that much time locally. “I have been involved since I turned 50,” he explained. “I have been in the Senior Games a total of about eight years.” Not only do the Senior Games offer competition to Art, but he loves the social aspect of them. “I enjoy the camaraderie. You get to know people,” he said. “The social side is terrific, but as a former soccer professional I can’t deny I enjoy the competition.” Art said the Senior Games mean a lot to its senior competitors. “It’s unbelievable, people over 50 competing,” he said. “There’s no place else in the world like this. It’s like I am reborn. You get your youth back. It beings back memories of 35 years ago.” MAGAZINE 35
