The Villages - May 2008 - (Page 38) The group performs a floating star formation. “We try to keep the numbers short to keep the audience’s interest,” Trish said. Although the show is still in the planning stages, Donna’s favorite number is “Miserlou” that she said sounds like snake-charmer music. It features an unusual costume, with a black, single-sleeved top accented with gold sequins. “It’s not just serious swim numbers. We try to add humor and keep it fun and entertaining for the audience,” Donna said. Donna and Trish love seeing “everything come together.” One of the main reasons for the group’s evolution is because the members share talents in other areas besides aquatic dancing. Bonnie Mooney, of the Village of Polo Ridge, found out about the group seven years ago while in the process of moving. The group does synchronized swimming across the pool in a line. An experienced seamstress, Bonnie also was able to put these talents to good work in the group. The whole group pitches in to make the costumes for the show. Everyone contributes ideas, and they all say that designing costumes and coming up with ideas for props is a huge part of the fun in planning the show. Bonnie said she is usually the one who makes the patterns. She went on to describe the sewing parties they occasionally have. “A few of us bring our sewing machines. Others cut material and some bring food. Everyone tries to do something,” Bonnie said. It takes a dedicated team to make all the costumes for a show. Each number in the show has a unique costume. The basic bathing suit may stay the same for three or four numbers, but accessories change. “I had done synchronized swimming when I was 16. I saw information on the group while we were buying our house. As soon as I saw it, I made up my mind,” Bonnie said. “It had been over 40 years since I did it, and this was different than what I had done before. There was a learning curve for me. I needed lots of coaching, and I practiced on my own,” said Bonnie. 38 MAY 2008
