A major element of Dianne Castle’s life has been her love of water and sharing it with others. And just as water can shape a landscape, Castle’s world has been molded by the pull of its currents.
Over the years she has taught hundreds of people — from babies to baby boomers — how to swim. She has been a permanent fixture at sport pools, and when she works she rehabilites patients with water. It was on The Villages Aquatic Swim Team that she met her husband. Swimming is in her heart, and there is a chance that it pumps chlorinated water. Castle’s love affair with water began when she was a young girl. “My two brothers coaxed me out on a lake to a raft,” she recalled. “The only way to get back was to swim.” While that might sound a little cruel, those strokes began her long odyssey with swimming. Prior to moving to The Villages in 2001, Castle lived in Maine and Massachusetts.

While a Massachusetts resident, she hired contractors to build an above-ground pool in her backyard. Her husband at the time wondered how the family would afford the project, to which Castle replied, “I’m going to give swim lessons.” That first summer she taught 300 kids. Castle continued teaching from her home for four years. Then she was recruited by the Haverhill, Mass., YMCA. It was there she became certified and taught classes of persons with special needs, adults and tiny tots for 15 years. “I fell in love with the water,” she said. But it was her six children who really inspired Castle to begin teaching swimming. “All my kids were swimming by the time they were 18 months old,” she said proudly.
