Mr. Potato Head

Then:

Then:

Richard James, a naval
mechanical engineer, was
working on equipment to
stabilize fragile instruments on
rough seas when he accidentally
knocked a metal spring to the
floor. After noticing how the
spring seemed to "step" along
the floor, James developed the
Slinky, one of the world's most
simple and recognizable toys.

When Mr. Potato Head first
was released in 1952, the
kit cost parents 98 cents
and only included face, hair
and limb pieces - kids had
to provide their own potato. Mrs.
Potato Head followed soon after
in 1953, and eventually a plastic
"potato" body was included
with the toy in 1964. Mr. Potato
Head also has the distinction of
being the first toy advertised on
television, in a commercial aired
on April 30, 1952.

Commercial pigment
company Binney
& Smith produced
their first crayon, the black
Staonal Marking Crayon, in 1902.
The following year, the company
released its first drawing
crayons. The name Crayola is
a combination of "craie," the
French word for chalk, and the
suffix "ola," meaning "oleaginous,"
a reference to the type of wax
used in the crayons. The first
box of crayons had 38 colors,
including discontinued colors
such as "Celestial Blue," "Raw
Sienna" and "Charcoal Gray."

Inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame
in 2000, Slinky sold more than 300
million units between 1945 and
2005. Other versions of Slinky were
created, including Slinky Dog and
Slinky Crazy Eyes. Slinky even went
to space aboard the space shuttle
Discovery as part of an experiment
to see how certain toys behaved
in a zero-gravity environment. At
the insistence of former company
President Betty James, Slinky
has remained affordable as an
alternative to other expensive toys.

Due to the overwhelming
popularity of Mr. Potato Head,
it was entered into the Toy
Hall of Fame in 2000. In recent
years, it has seen a resurgence
of popularity due to the Toy
Story films from Disney/Pixar.
Toy maker Hasbro also released
officially licensed versions of
Mr. Potato Head from popular
media franchises such as Star
Wars (Darth Tater), Indiana
Jones (Taters of the Lost Ark),
Transformers (Optimash Prime)
and more.

Now:
A name that instantly makes
you think of the iconic yellow
box, Crayola offers a wide
assortment of crayons, colored
pencils, markers and more. While
the company still carries the
standard 64-count box, it also
offers assortments of glitter,
metallic and pastel colors, along
with a custom 64-count
box where
customers
choose their
own colors.
The company
recently held
a contest to
replace the
"Dandelion" color,
with "Bluetiful"
replacing it
beginning in
early 2018.
