Sanibel Islanders Driveway Parties
When you attend a driveway party, you can
expect to meet new people, eat great food and
relax. But neighbors in the Village of Sanibel get so
much more.
When the village first opened in 2010, new
neighbors decided to throw a driveway party to
mingle with their fellow residents, which resulted in
the formation of the Sanibel Islanders Social Club.
"Driveway parties are a great way to get things
started in a new neighborhood," Sanibel Islanders
President Kathy Somers said.
The group has grown substantially, with bigger
and better socials and driveway get-togethers.
At their parties they have a 50-50 drawing, snacks,
good conversation and plenty of relaxation. It's also
Judy Nichols expressed that the best block parties
require caring neighbors and someone to organize the
event, and Whiting Way has plenty of both.
"It's not hard, but having that person or persons
take the first step is important," she said.
Judy provides tables and usually prepares her go-to
shrimp dish for the potluck table.
Other neighbors bring a variety of dips, appetizers
and desserts, both store-bought and homemade.
Whiting Way's neighbors are always welcoming to
new residents, informing passing golf cars on the day
and time they meet each week.
They even share food with Community Watch
guards as they peruse the neighborhood.
"It's been really neat," Judy said. "There is a great
sense of fellowship in the Village of Glenbrook."

If You're HostIng
If you want to be a superb host, there are a few
things to remember. You should provide tables
for the potluck and a few chairs for visitors. Buy
plenty of water and have a cooler with ice for
refreshments. Be sure to buy ample amounts of
cups, plates, napkins and utensils. Have large
garbage bags on each driveway participating
to make clean-up quick and easy. Finally, place
name tags and markers on a table so people will
remember each other's names.

WHat about food?
Block party food is centered around potluck tables.
Quick and easy slow cooker recipes, finger foods and
sweet treats abound. Some may bring their go-to
homemade dish, while others stick to store-bought
goodies. Whichever you prefer, bringing food to a
block party is not only in good taste, but is sure to
be remembered by your fellow neighbors. You might
even inspire someone who didn't contribute to
prepare a delectable dish for next time. See page 14
for recipes to make for your next block party.
