"He likes to make a statement," Bill said.
Bill tells the story of a man he befriended, a
Korean War veteran.
"He lived in an apartment complex I
managed in Leesburg," he said.
Concerned for the elderly man, Bill set up
well-being checks with the fire department.
Eventually, he realized the daily phone calls were
"I shopped around for facilities and found
him a nice place," Bill said. "I ended up getting
him on a VA program that supplemented his
income. He was lonely, but now he has meals
with 165 residents, and Roscoe and I like to visit
him. The place has a 'Wall of Honor' with photos
of veterans who live there. They all love Roscoe
- especially when he wears his patriotic scarf."
Roscoe has many friends - big and small,
canine and human. As a member of the
Dynamic Dog Club Therapy Team, he likes to
visit local care centers where he can inspire
smiles and solicit rubs.
"He likes to hold out his paw, but don't be
mistaken - he's not offering a handshake, he's
showing you where to rub him," Bill said. "We
go to all the pet-friendly places and dance on the
town squares. He goes to Amerikanos (Grille)
and just enjoys being out."
It took some adjusting for Bill to get used to
the bundle of energy.
"It was strange at first," he said. "He was so
fragile - like chicken bones. But I bathed him
and took care of him. I even stepped on him a
few times and he squealed."
And then came the outfits - one teeny shirt
and silly scarf at a time.
"My sons were like, 'Really, Dad?' They have
these big dogs - 135 pounds. But he fits right
in. And my sons just love him to pieces. He's
hard not to love."
As for his former misgivings, Bill Gamble is a
believer in the power of a few small paws.
"He's my best pal."
