It's a Musical Month
Where music goes, fun follows.
You'll find plenty of each here in The Villages, thanks to top-notch entertainment
and local talent. In this issue we focus on theater, music and the people who bring
both to the community for our enjoyment. Among them is Michael Scott Miller, better
known as Scooter the DJ. He doesn't strum a guitar, play a piano or sing a note of
music. But Scooter knows how to thrill the crowds and get Villagers on their feet with
his infectious energy and heart-pumping playlists. His name is synonymous with fun,
and he's been a fan favorite here for decades.
"I have this mindset that if people aren't going to have fun, it's not going to be my
fault," he said.
Read more about Scooter and his accidental career in the entertainment industry.
And don't miss our Q&A with Whitney Morse, in which she explains how "Don't Tell
Nonnie" got its name and start at the Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center.
"My husband (Jason Goedken) and I thought it would be a great way to utilize the
lobby as a performance space and to give people another nightlife option," Morse said.
"I also saw there wasn't really anything comparable."
Morse's open mic and cabaret night offers residents of all musical skill levels a
moment in the spotlight.
For diners with an appetite for opera, Katie Belle's has a feast for you, compliments
of Maestro's World Famous Singing Servers. They bring food and fun to the table every
Friday evening. Maestro Bill Doherty is the man behind the program.
"I remember the joy I had sitting on my mother's lap while she practiced piano,"
Doherty said.
Music was a family affair, and a precocious young Doherty was so eager to get
involved, he took the piano apart and put it together again at age 4. At age 8 he was
writing music, and at 12 he was awarded the New York State Humanities Award after a
teacher sent his Mass to Kitty Carlisle, head of the New York State Council on the Arts.
A musical powerhouse, Doherty has spent every day since engrossed in music, and has
become a world-renowned teacher. Read more about his musical endeavors and the
highly select program he founded to help young artists hone their musical skills.
"I'm a singer, composer and pianist, but I always felt my real gift was teaching,"
Doherty said.
Also on the topic of teaching, this issue features Villagers who have opened their
doors to international students enrolled in the EF Educational Homestays Program.
The primary focus of the immersion program is language and culture, and students get
plenty in The Villages and surrounding areas.
"If they had to rely on secondhand stories and textbooks, they wouldn't get to know
America like its citizens do," said Ray Lammes, Village of St. Charles resident and host.
Find out how the exchange program has grown and what Villagers are discovering
in the process.
These are just a few of the great stories in this issue. As always, we thank you for
reading and wish you a wonderful month - in which music and fun abound.
