Nike Brings Stewart Cink to Villages by STEVE TRIVETT Most parents are thrilled when their grown children come to visit, but for Anne and Rob Cink, their son’s next visit is reason for excitement for all of Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. The Village of Caroline residents’ son is Stewart Cink, the No. 10 golfer in the world, and he will host Nike Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at The Villages Polo Club. Admission is free. The event will include a clinic, chance drawings, a demo day for the newest equipment from NIKE Golf and the chance to meet one of the biggest stars in professional golf up close. professional staff, Dave is a member of NIKE’s club professional staff. “I talked to my local NIKE rep and told him we would like to have a clinic here,” Dave said. “But (I) had a special request: We wanted Stewart — it was a no-brainer because his parents live here.” All the pieces were arranged at NIKE and in The Villages and the puzzle came together. Since joining the PGA Tour full time in 1997, Stewart has been one of the best players in the world. He won five times in his career, including this year’s Travelers Championship. This year, he’s also finished second — to NIKE stablemate Tiger Woods — in the WGCAccenture Match Play Championship, second at the PODS Championship in Tampa and third for third at the Masters. Going into the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky — where he played on the American team for the fourth time in his career — he was ranked 10th in the World Golf Rankings. He has also played on three Presidents Cup teams and on two World Cup teams. As a college player at Georgia Tech — he graduated in 1995 with a degree in management — he gained AllAmerican honors three times and received the Dave Williams, Haskins and Jack Nicklaus awards as the best college player in the country in 1995. He earned his PGA Tour stripes by winning three times on the Nationwide Tour in 1996 and made an immediate impact on the PGA Tour in 1996 by winning the Canon Greater Hartford Open. He qualified for the Presidents Cup for the first time — he has played in the event three times — in 2000 and played in his first Ryder Cup in 2002. He’s also been a winner during golf ’s “Silly Season,” teaming with Zach Johnson and Scott Verplank to capture the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge in 2006 and then pairing with J.J. Henry to win the 2007 CVS Caremark Charity Classic. While he has yet to win a major championship, he has finished in the top six at all four — he was third at the 2008 Masters, third at the 2001 U.S. Open, sixth at the 2007 British Open and third at the 1999 PGA Championship. “Stewart is one of the premier players in the world,” said Ken Creely, director of country club operations in The Villages. “This will be a special day for all of the Villagers who play golf.” Much to the delight of Anne Cink. “Stewart called me and told me he was coming to The Villages,” she said. “That was the first I knew about it, and he was very excited. “He’s been here three times since we moved — once when he drove up when he was playing at Disney World and twice for Christmas — this is going to be an excuse to throw a big party.” With her son serving not only as the guest of honor, but also the master of ceremonies. “He’s very good,” Anne said proudly. “He runs a charity tournament at home and he runs the whole show. He really enjoys doing it.” “All of us are looking forward to having Stewart visit,” said Dave Morin, the head professional at Tierra del Sol Country Club. “I’m hoping that 2,000 people come to the party.” Dave said he hopes that most people attending the event will arrive in golf carts. “There will be parking for cars, but it will be limited and won’t have as easy an access as the fans driving carts,” he said. Dave was the point man setting up Stewart Cink’s visit. While Stewart is a member of NIKE’s playing OCTOBER 2008
