FOOD Oktoberfest By Jennifer Gorczany Friendship, dancing and of course food... that’s what its all about for the The Villages German-American Club! Ein Prosit! The Villages German-American Club members are proud of their heritage. On special German occasions they celebrate with friendship, dancing and, of course ... food! Oktoberfest will be celebrated with a parade in The Villages on Oct. 27. See what special recipes club members cooked up for readers of The Villages Magazine so we all can celebrate Oktoberfest in true German style. Music, friendship and dancing ... it’s a common bond among members of The Villages German-American Club — about 500 in all. “I just love (the club). The dancing and the food, we celebrate all of the German occasions,” said Eleanore Mollenhauer, president of the German-American Club and a Village of Rio Grande resident. The celebrating also includes cake, and Erika Scholze of the Village of Santiago is one of the best bakers. Erika is the “cake lady” and she is responsible for getting members to sign up to bring cakes to club events. “I make sure members are aware of the meetings and that one of them is bringing a cake,” she said. Celebrating those occasions gives both new residents and those that have lived in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown for some time a chance to meet new friends and share their German heritage. “(The Villages) has everything you could ever want, there is so much to do. (The German-American Club) is a great way to meet others. I am part of the Schatzie’s (a German dance club in The Villages) and am teaching the group now,” said Irmgard Confortini of the Village of Springdale. German-American Club member Eva Grum of the Village of Polo Ridge agreed. “The lifestyle, the dancing; I am still enjoying the club and am also one of the Schatzie’s.” The tie that binds is that all of the members are very proud of their German heritage. Helga Weaver, a Village of Briar Meadow resident, met Mollenhauer through a shared Villages activity. “I met Eleanore at a water aerobics class and she asked me to join the club, I have been with her ever since,” Weaver said. OCTOBER 2011 The German-American Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of every month at La Hacienda Recreation Center.
