Continuing a Legacy
Meet Paige McCabe, Director of Operations
P
aige McCabe's memories roll tape.
She's a child sitting in the
back of her family's pickup truck
overlooking the field just north
of their barn.
A young McCabe's heart races as she
witnesses her first polo game, excited by
the thuds of horse hooves and the whacks
of the sticks by players - including her
dear stepdad, Jim Parr.
She's enchanted. She wants in on
the action.
Fast forward.
A preteen McCabe approaches the
same field. The girl, not quite 80 pounds
soaking wet, mounts a thousand-pound
horse, as she's done many times before.
But this time, she has a stick in her hand.
She's learning to play polo, inspired
by her stepfather. She loves it.
Today, McCabe, 28, surrounded by
family moments and milestones in every
direction, feels right at home at her barn.
It's where she and Parr keep their
horses, as well as the ones they lend to
visiting players. It's where they store their
gently worn helmets, mallets, saddles and
whips.
It's a lively place where her three dogs
and two barn cats run around and up to
18 horses whinny and munch hay in the
20-year-old stalls.
The memories go on and on for McCabe.
Polo's not just a sport for her, and being
director of operations for The Villages Polo
Club isn't just a job.
Polo is intertwined with nearly every
part of her past, present and probable
future plans.
Because McCabe carries a family legacy.
With the help of other local players
like Lord Lyall, her grandfather, H. Gary
Morse, brought polo to The Villages with
the vision of offering residents something
special.
Since then, McCabe has witnessed a
variety of milestones, such as the births of
the first horses the club bred seven years
ago. She even helped select some of the
parents for their small breeding operation.
McCabe said there's nothing like a baby
horse, and she loves helping imprint them,
which is handling them to desensitize
them to humans.
"That's the fun part," she said.
She enjoys watching the horses grow
up and spending time with them.
"My horses are so spoiled," she said.
From the fly spray system to new shoes
to chiropractic visits and acupuncture,
she makes sure her horses get
the best of care.
