What brought you to the area?
My mom and dad have a house in The Villages six
months out of the year, when they're not in Ohio. My
wife's parents have a house in The Villages, too. God's
will stepped in and offered my father-in-law a church without
him even asking for it. He's pastor of Discovery Church of God
in Wildwood. So that was in November, and they said come
down here in 30 days, so we did.
Tell us about your career background.
I got a criminal justice degree from Wilmington College in
Ohio. I went to the police academy, and the rest is history. It
was my calling. I worked 10 years for German Township Police
Department in Clark County in Springfield, Ohio, and two years
for Tremont City.
Can you name your proudest moment as an officer?
The biggest thing I've ever done is help save someone's life.
He was an older guy jacking up his car in German Township
around eight years ago and just passed out. I got there first and
was the first one giving him CPR and then other deputies and
medics arrived. He ended up living. If you save someone's life,
that's the ultimate reward.
What's it like working for Lady Lake PD?
I love it. It's great. Everything seems well maintained, well
kept, especially on The Villages end. They definitely take care of
their facilities, parking lots and businesses. That was one of the
things that drew me was it seemed like a nice area. It's more of
a city than where I'm from. Where I was from before was rural,
country, trees. I've been on training June 29 until Aug. 29. I'm
learning the new laws. There's different verbiage and language
and charges in Florida than in Ohio.
Describe your role as an officer.
I'm basically on the patrol shift. It's a front-line job. You handle
dispatch calls, from questions about civil issues to robberies or
thefts or domestics or whatever comes out. If there's a suspicious
person out back and he's got a gun, they're calling me. Whether
minor to big, we're the front line to go there and access it and see
if we need to bring more people in, like detectives.
Do you have a favorite part of your job?
It's different every day. It is all about protect and serve. I
like to go in and help protect or save people.
What else would you like to share about Lady
We are a professional department. Everyone I've met and
come across has been that way. We're here to protect
and to work with the community. It's definitely more of a
community-interactive department, where we're here to
help you. At least two, three times a shift, people come up
to me and say, "Thank you for everything." I love that. I'm
just one good guy of many here serving the public. Don't
be afraid to come say hi to me if you see me out eating or
out in the car.
How about your interests and hobbies?
I'm a big golfer. My dad is a big golfer. That's why he came
down here. I've played all 12 championship courses.
They're all nice. I like them all, but Evans Prairie and
Tierra Del Sol are probably two of my favorite. I go to my
father-in-law's church whenever I'm not working. I also
love to hunt and fish and am looking forward to upcoming
Florida hunting season. Being from Ohio, I'm used to cold,
snow and ice, so it should be different, but I definitely miss
the snow already. I was born during the blizzard of 1978.
Anything to add?
I'm pretty much just a Christian family man. My wife
works for the Early Childhood Center as a teacher's aide.
She came down in December and got that job first thing,
because that school is great down here in The Villages.
You can't beat it. I have a 6-year-old boy who goes to The
Villages Charter School. He's in first grade. We have two
dogs - a chow mix named Hyena and Abbie, a basset
