Masters Tennis, Anyone?

M

asters tennis, a modified version of tennis, is
taking off in The Villages.
The game presents a way for longtime players
to remain associated with the game, and also serves as an
easy introduction for newcomers.
Take it from Quenton Jones, recreation supervisor
at Tierra Del Sol Recreation Center, who has led several
clinics on masters tennis.
"The sport has had a surge in new players," Jones
said. "We have conducted several introduction clinics for
masters tennis and the turnout has been very positive."

chance typically leave as converts.
"I have noticed players who played regular tennis love
the masters tennis concept," Jones said. "Some players
have limited mobility, but playing masters tennis will still
give tennis players the same game as regular tennis, while
minimizing the stress on their limitations. You basically
have all the aspects of tennis without being hindered to
cover a larger court or hitting balls that are difficult to hit
back."
Danny Jacobs, sports coordinator for The Villages
Recreation Department, said masters tennis was developed
by the United States Tennis Association as a way to teach
tennis to children. But with fewer physical demands, the
masters version also has become a hit with older players.
"Masters tennis was identified as a great way to let the
purest tennis players enjoy playing for more years than
the traditional version of the sport," Jacobs said.
