Dragon SiSterS team
A sisterhood of dragon boaters unites to practice their
paddling techniques. But working in unison toward a
common goal gives them far more than a vantage point in
the water. Together they gain physical strength, emotional
wellness and a mental edge.
"It's a meeting of hearts and minds," said Sandra Skopaz, group leader. "We are the only all-women's team, and
we come from all walks of life - we are mothers, grandmothers, teachers, nurses, business professionals. Most of
us have never been athletes; we've never even been on a
team. But we have this one thing in common - we enjoy
being together and contributing to great causes."
Among those great causes is breast cancer research.
"In March we do Girls Night Out, and we are one
of the largest donators," Skopaz said. "All the women
contribute. We make a giant wine basket and sell tickets.
We have done that for years, and we will do it again."
Skopaz said the group is made up of many breast
cancer survivors - women who have a calm demeanor
and simply see life as a celebration.
"I have not had breast cancer, but many members have
and they bond over the struggle," she said. "One member
just went through chemo at 74 years old. She lost her hair,
but she just kept coming back. I am proud of this group of
unsung heroes, cancer supporters and caregivers."
