ILL ST WE IT OT G BY THERESA CAMPBELL PHOTOS BY MARIANNE LOBAUGH Villagers Water skiing. Really? Really. The idea may sound a bit daring or ridiculously insane to some, yet Villagers who are water ski enthusiasts are having a grand time skimming across the waters of Lake Miona — right in the backyard of their neighbors in the Village of Bridgeport at Miona Shores. “We’ve still got it!,” said Bob Smalley, 65, of the Village of Ashland, who started the Water Ski Club in May as a fun way to enjoy his favorite sport with others who are just as passionate about the sport. “For 2 1/2 years, I stayed on a lake in Virginia trying to ski, and I couldn’t find any retirees who were water skiing,” Smalley recalled. “They were just out fishing and I wanted to ski.” He was thrilled to meet other Villagers who were eager to ski again. The club is open to all skill levels, including those who have never tried the sport and want to learn. “It’s never too late, and if it’s on your bucket list, you’ve got to do it,” said Hal Tompkins, 60, of the Village of Bonnybrook. “My grandfather was 64 years old when he learned how to double ski.” NOVEMBER 2009
