It seems almost counterintuitive to describe this year’s Austin Game Developers Conference as an “online games” conference. Sure, we’ve still got the great sessions from powerhouse developers and luminaries sharing best practices on developing, monetizing and producing the best PC games and MMOs, but that’s really just one facet. Much like the times and the theme to this year’s show, Austin GDC has evolved to produce more content, more events, and more networking opportunities for connected games developers delving into virtual worlds, children’s play spaces, and emerging business frontiers. Our opening Keynote, Lane Merrifield of Club Penguin, and our opening Worlds in Motion Keynote, Mel Guymon of Lively by Google, are testaments to the industry vision and are events you will not want to miss. Furthering the lines of progress, our audio and writing tracks have also evolved to break out of the loop — reconsidering next gen audio tools and looking towards the future of storytelling — with new experiments in emerging narrative for both casual and core gaming as well as by providing fascinating new ways to telegraph emotions through stories and sounds. On the other hand, some things are better left to tradition and comfort—like the laid back atmosphere of Austin. You’ll still be able to connect with old and new friends, peers, and business associates throughout these three days perhaps while joining in on festivities such as the official opening party at Maggie Mae’s, and our closing night party held with SXSW ScreenBurn + Interactive at Mohwak. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming days.
