These, Carter believes, will be the “killer apps” that will sustain Rockwell throughout a tough 2009 as customers start to recognize a real competitive differentiator. “The goal of a unified data model is to get [information] to the right person in the right context in order to drive profitability,” Carter said. He can create a vision and a strategy to get there. A lot of managers can’t bridge the gap between vision and execution.” In addition, he is credited with building strong relationships with his internal team as well as with customers. “One of his strengths is his interpersonal skills,” Fiske said. And while Carter was apprehensive to lay out his strategy for Rockwell Software after only a few weeks as group president during an interview at Rockwell’s Automation Fair in November, he did seem confident in his knowledge of the industry. “We can talk technology, but at the end of the day the customer wants value that is demonstrable and they want it now,” Carter told Managing Automation. During its two-year acquisition spree, Rockwell has been adding core technologies that have broadened its focus from plant floor control and production applications to a holistic view of the enterprise. Rockwell calls this a “unified production model.” As a result of acquiring Incuity, Rockwell is rolling out VantagePoint software next month, a federated system that connects disparate data sources via Web services and unites the relevant information within a single user interface.
