Dassault’s strategy is to expand its vertical presence beyond the automotive and aerospace & defense markets, where it has excelled. The company has identified 11 vertical industries that it will target, including high tech, apparel/footwear, life sciences, and CPG. So how will Dassault succeed against larger ERP competitors, such as SAP and Oracle? For one thing, it will be key for Dassault to get customers to adopt the services-oriented architecture the company is rolling out as part of its new V6 generation of products rather than the SOA infrastructure of its competitors, Lemke said. “Those guys have declared war at the infrastructure level,” Lemke said. Customer adoption of its V6 products, announced earlier this year, is not likely to happen quickly. One longtime Dassault customer, electronics contract manufacturer Celestica, for example, has no immediate plans to evaluate or migrate to V6. While the company is interested in the integration benefits that an SOA-based product could bring, it is hesitant to touch the many customizations that Celestica has made to its existing MatrixOne 10.5 PLM system, says Tracy Smiley, director of product data management at Celestica. Dassault, in fact, does not expect to see significant V6-generated revenue this year. “The ramp-up will be next year,” Lemke said. THE BLACKBERRY GOES NATIVE WITH SAP CRM T he BlackBerry smart phone is no longer just a mobile e-mail machine. It is on its way to becoming a full-fledged productivity tool that allows anytime access to enterprise applications. A partnership between BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) and SAP has resulted in the integration of SAP’s customer relationship management (CRM) application onto the BlackBerry device. More important, the mobile CRM application is only the first step in porting the Bill McDermott entire SAP business suite onto the BlackBerry — which will occur within months, not years, SAP said. The duo began working together in 2004, delivering at that time the ability for mobile workers to access SAP CRM using the BlackBerry device as a browser.
