WSNs provide secure, reliable two-way wireless communications, enabling automation and control solutions that are not feasible with wired systems to aid in production, operational efficiency, safety, and asset management, according to ON World. Among the factors that will fuel the increases are the emergence of commercial wireless sensor products from automation vendors, the ratification of the WirelessHART standard, and the anticipated approval of the ISA100.11a wireless standard by the end of 2008. With the continuing high cost and scarcity of oil and gas supplies and strict regulations at refineries and petrochemical plants, oil and gas companies will be eager to invest in WSN solutions for pipeline process, safety, air quality, and environmental uses, the research company said.
