The PLC market was nearly $9.0 billion in 2007 and is predicted to exceed $12 billion in 2012. The growth rate, which is slower than in previous years, is mainly due to globalization, which is forcing companies in various industries to invest in new capacities. Additional strong growth was noted in building automation, automation demand, and programmable automation controllers (PACs), multi-disciplined controllers that can provide real-time logic, motion, and process control, in addition to HMI and other functions, on a single platform. PLCs, which are used across discrete and process industries, will gain from increased demand for automation in emerging economies and as companies realize the need to conserve energy and cut costs. ARC predicted that PLC-based PAC market growth would be higher than overall PLC market growth.
