It’s becoming a familiar mantra among the world’s leading manufacturers. But it isn’t always easy, especially when trying to run the business on the front line and, at the same time, drive the corporate infrastructure to operate faster, better, more efficiently, and more cost-effectively every day. How can the world’s manufacturing companies find a workable balance between the critical pursuit of stable, ever-more efficient operational excellence and the urgent competitive pressure to deliver often disruptive, market-leading innovation? Is this a potential innovation paradox for 21st century manufacturing management? “It’s not always a paradox,” says Lisa Bodell, CEO of innovation consultancy futurethink in New York. “You can do both — innovate for efficiency and also innovate new business models, services, products, or market ideas. You’ve just got to give your people the permission to innovate.” “A lot of companies do struggle to find that balance,” says Günter Rester, director of manufacturing industries at Microsoft. “Innovation is not just about the design department; it is a challenge for the whole corporate culture.
