NORTH
WILD DRAMA &
FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND
Start at the state's northern border
near Crescent City for tide pools
and windswept beauty at Enderts
Beach, within Redwood National
Park. (If skies are clear, stick around
for an epic sunset.) Further south,
stop by quaint Mendocino to hire
bikes, then follow the oceanfront rail
trail at nearby MacKerricher State
Park. Just north of San Francisco,
relax at Stinson Beach, then feast on
barbecued oysters on the patio at
the Sand Dollar Restaurant.
Continue south to the university
town of Santa Cruz and its
famous beach. Watch surfers at
Steamer Lane, find souvenirs
along Santa Cruz Wharf, and ride
a roller coaster at Santa Cruz
Beach Boardwalk.
From north to
south, California
beaches offer
epic beauty and
endless variety.
There are more
than 1,000
miles (1,609
kilometres) of
coastline in the
Golden State.

w
hen it comes
to beaches,
California is
hard to compare. Travel
along the
Golden State's hundreds of miles of
coastline to discover a beach for every interest and style: remote coves
with only your footprints in the sand,
broad beaches filled with surfers and
families, and everything in between.
Here's a look at some of California's
finest beach retreats, north to south.
If you plan to swim, be prepared
for a refreshing plunge, as the Pacific
Ocean stays fairly cool year-round.
Temperatures are warmest in late
summer, when southern waters
have an average temperature of
20°C (68°F). In the far north, temperatures reach about 13°C (55°F),
and wetsuits are advised.
Along the Central Coast, first visit
Carmel-by-the-Sea, with storybook
cottages, shops, and the sugary
sands of Carmel Beach. Continue
south to Big Sur and Andrew Molera
State Park, with horseback riding
along the beach and camping in
coastal bluffs.
Further south, at sheltered Avila
Beach, walk the pier, where fishermen sell the day's catch and sea
lions bark and bellow. Hire bikes and
ride the paved Bob Jones Trail, or
take a guided tour of Point San Luis
Lighthouse. Travel south past rolling
coastal hills to Santa Barbara, nicknamed "the American Riviera." Take
a stand-up paddle boarding lesson
in the harbour, or watch tanned athletes spike volleyballs at Santa Barbara's East Beach. Families head for
calm and shallow West Beach, while
couples (and sometimes celebrities)
stroll along Butterfly Beach.
San Diego
SOUTH
SURF HEAVEN
& SANDY FUN
Is that Jennifer Aniston walking her
dog? Along Malibu Beach in Los
Angeles County, it just might be.
Cliff-front homes here sit on some
of the state's most exclusive-and
pricey-coastal real estate. Watch
the action at Surfrider Beach, an
official World Surfing Reserve.
Continue south to Santa Monica,
with a wide beach and a lively pier
topped by a Ferris wheel. Shop at
nearby Third Street Promenade, or
hire bikes and pedal south to Venice
Beach to watch street performers,
body-builders, and skateboarders.
Next is Orange County, or simply
"the O.C." At Huntington Beach, take
surf lessons, then tour the International Surfing Museum. At Newport
Beach, hire an electric Duffy Boat to
visit nearby Balboa Island. Be sure
to try the local frozen treat, a chocolate-dipped Balboa Bar. Just south
at Crystal Cove Beach, discover tide
pools and kid-friendly surf. Next is
ritzy Laguna Beach, first settled by
artists and now a favourite weekend
getaway for Southern Californians.
At California's south end, Torrey
Pines State Beach makes a great
day journey from San Diego. Beautiful Silver Strand State Beach is
the perfect spot for family picnics
and safe swimming. In the state's
southernmost beach town, Imperial
Beach, walk the pier to look for dolphins, then end the day with seafood
tacos at Tin Fish Restaurant.
