alifornia is all about
entertainment,
whether it's on stage,
screen, or the sport
field. In the L.A.
region, Hollywood
and Burbank have long been the
centre of film and TV production,
and are home to major studios like
Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, Paramount,
and Universal Studios.
The San Francisco Bay Area
stands out in film animation and
technology. The stars of Finding
Nemo (and Finding Dory) and the
Toy Story films were all dreamt up at
the Disney Pixar campus, based in
the East Bay. Lucasfilm (now owned
by Disney) has campuses in San
Francisco's Presidio and in nearby
Marin County.

ROCK LEGENDS
AND THE MOST
POPULAR FESTIVALS
California has long been a magnet
for rock stars. In the late 1960s, the
time of San Francisco's legendary
Summer of Love, groups including
Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful
Dead were long-haired hit makers
based in the city's Haight-Ashbury
district. Leading talent still thrives
here. Green Day and Train got their
start in the region.
California also puts on amazing
music festivals. In the desert town
of Indio, just south of Palm Springs,
the Coachella Valley Music and Arts
Festival draws celebrity-filled crowds
to see big names like Guns N' Roses
and Sia. BottleRock Napa Valley
also features top bands, like Gwen

Stefani and Florence + the Machine,
plus there's local wine, craft beer,
and excellent food.
San Francisco also puts on noteworthy free events. Outside Lands
brings big-name music (Radiohead,
Elton John, Mumford & Sons) to
Golden Gate Park. The multi-week
Stern Grove Festival lets you relax on
the grass and enjoy Janelle Monáe
and other headliners.
Other types of music, plus dance
and theatre, also thrive in the Golden
State. The Los Angeles Philharmonic
performs at two iconic venues: the
Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney
Concert Hall. San Francisco has a

outstanding ballet and opera.

Theatre lovers can watch top productions at the La Jolla Playhouse on the
University of California, San Diego,
campus and at Berkeley Repertory
Theater near San Francisco. The
Geffen Playhouse in downtown L.A.
and the Wallis Annenberg Center for
the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills
are two excellent venues, with major
stars often cast in lead roles. South
Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa is an
Orange County institution.

BIG-LEAGUE SPORTS
From spring to autumn, professional
baseball and football (soccer) fill
stadiums statewide. The National
Football League takes centre stage
in autumn and winter. Hockey and
basketball seasons run from winter
through to spring.
If a team is champion at the end
of the season, like the San Francisco
Giants baseball team and basketball's Golden State Warriors have
been in recent years, get ready for
major parades and celebrations.
