Mission Inn Hotel & Spa
Riverside's famous luxury hotel was first built as a meager two-story adobe
house in 1876; then it turned into a star-studded resort, attracting prominent
guests like Sweden's Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus, shown above, in 1926.
(Adolphus later became king and reigned from 1950 to 1973.) Over the years,
the elegant Mission Revival-style hotel grew to a full city block and welcomed
U.S. presidents (Roosevelt, Taft, Hoover, among others), celebrities (Judy
Garland, Robert Redford), and Hollywood productions (1915's The Vampire).
In addition to its luxury accommodations, the Mission Inn is part museum and
art gallery, housing artifacts like a rare Spanish bell that dates back to 1247.
