Silicon Valley One - Fall 2008 - (Page 4) big ideas Trends and innovations in philanthropy How nonprofits and their clients respond in tough times By Richard Rapaport fter a decade distributing groceries at Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, Senior Director Cindy McCown has become adept at identifying first-time clients. “They are the people who don’t have pushcarts,” she says. Firsttimers, she notes, “put their food in laundry baskets, strollers or even kids’ wagons.” Sadly, some of these new clients were, not so long ago, contributors. McCown recalls a mother with three children, a one-time food donor who recently came to Second Harvest for both groceries and advice.
