From Emmett D. Carson One of Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s first gatherings last year brought together more than 150 immigrant leaders from across our region for a delightful evening of food, art, poetry and stories at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. Introductions that night jump-started discussions among a number of attendees with similar experiences who had never met. We continued to facilitate these discussions as we gathered information about regional grantmaking approaches that would benefit our community. See our immigration issue brief at www.siliconvalleycf.org. Two-thirds of our region’s residents or their parents were born outside the United States. The diversity of our immigrant communities challenges us to understand different immigrant experiences and the need to build critical alliances. This issue of ONE: Innovation Through Philanthropy spotlights creative approaches to turning these aspirations—both for immigrants and longtime residents—into reality. Our cover story underscores the importance of weaving newcomers into the fabric of society, whether they work in fields or industrial parks. Frank Sharry, a national leader in developing new approaches to stubborn policy challenges, discusses philanthropy’s response to changes in local communities. Fund advisor and E*Trade co-founder Bernie Newcomb, whose innovation enabled individuals to trade stocks online, describes his focus on economic self-sufficiency and building communities. Silicon Valley is becoming even more global, as evidenced by the growing number of donor advisors who are supporting worthwhile projects abroad. The innovation that has made our region a world leader and destination point is essential for helping all who live and work here share in the prosperity. one innovation through philanthropy Emmett D.
