It was apparent that all patients who had showed evidence of the disease, which caused fibrosis of the skin and connective tissues throughout the body, received prior gadolinium-enhanced MRA exams. Some patients experienced skin thickening that prevented them from bending and extending joints, restricting their overall mobility. Patients also experienced fibrosis that spread to other parts of the body such as the diaphragm, muscles in the thigh and lower abdomen, as well as interior lung vessels. By December 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had received more than 90 reports of patients with moderate- to end-stage renal failure who developed NSF/NFD within two days to 18 months of receiving gadolinium-based contrasts a strong link between NSF/NFD and 2 for MRI or MRA .
