Cardholder facing payments also decrease fraud because consumers never give up their cards. Not to be overlooked, in terms of advantages, is that most consumers expect to have more payment options. The industry has used the term multi-lane terminal to designate these products, and in the past they’ve been used almost exclusively in check-out lanes, such as in supermarkets and large retailers. Manufacturers are now setting their sights on a new market – single-payment locations in which customers pay when they check out, including many restaurants and small, independent shops. Think the counter at your favorite pizza restaurant. At Hypercom, the company touted its new SmartPayments Easy Retailer product in a January 2008 news release by saying that it brings “the speed and convenience of cardholder-facing payment terminals to single-lane checkout counters.” The product connects to an existing point-ofsale system or PC-based processing system, but on a smaller scale than with traditional multi-lane environments. It provides the security and speed of larger systems featuring plug-and-play. With Verifone’s multi-lane products, there is a focus on the content capabilities, which include delivering branding, promotion and advertising content to the payment screen. Called PAYware Vision, the system enables electronic signature capture. But, how can transactions be done without handing over their cards? The answer lies in “cardholder facing” systems that allow the consumer to swipe the card on their own. When Hypercom announced a spiffy new marketing program for its multi-lane payment terminals, it was a natural decision to use the words “smart” and “easy” in the product name – it wants retailers to believe that its terminal products are just that. At Verifone, consumer-facing payment devices are marketed as a new vision in payments. 700 MHz - Not Cheap By Bruce Burke Continues on page 10 20533 Biscayne Blvd., Suite 1142. Aventura, FL 33180. US In last month’s TPP, we covered the Federal Communications Commission’s 700 Mhz auction, open source wireless and android handsets. As strange as this may have sounded to you, this auction is happening now, and the wireless world is about to dramatically change. The auction, currently being held, known officially as Auction 73, (www.wireless.fcc.gov/auctions) is made possible by the move from analog to digital television, which frees large swaths of highly desirable bandwidth in the 700MHz range. The spectrum is so desirable that the FCC and others have referred to this spectrum as “beachfront property”. This “beachfront property” represents one of the last frontiers of nationwide RF spectrum that is expected to be available for at least another decade, and practical for consumer use, which has generated intense interest and even more intense expenditures. The 700 MHz spectrum attracts so much attention because the characteristics of its “broadcast bands” make it the Holy Grail of wireless. Radio waves in this band travel farther, penetrate physical objects, and navigate around obstructions better than in any other band currently available in the marketplace. As a result, it becomes economically, as well as technically, possible to do really high speed wireless broadband access with licenses comprising fewer frequency bands.
