Despite rosy proclamations by the company about “creating value for all Motorola shareholders,” there was speculation that the company was actually trying to isolate problems in its handset division, Mobile Devices. “Our decision to separate our Mobile Devices Motorola’s History in Handsets Last year, 2007, was a particularly bad year for Motorola’s handset business as it floundered to find a repeat of the success of its Razr handset. The cell phone has many different modes of operation that lend them to providing mobile payments, from simple web based applications to SMS and NRC or RFID based technologies. The growth of mobile payments is dependent on both technology and marketing. The technology must enable safe and secure payments, while marketing has to provide viable markets for the services. If the existing handsets can be utilized, it is a plus because a wider audience is available. But, if handsets have to be purchased, then the ability to market cellular service to a wide audience is required.
