The Prepaid Press - April 15, 2008 - (Page 26) RETAIL FOCUS April 15 · 2008 - 26 Retail Focus in Brief Postilion, a provider of software solutions for self-service banking and payments and a division of S1 Corporation, has announced that Woolworths, one of South Africa’s leading retailers, has issued its millionth in-house gift card since the launch of these cards in 300 outlets seven months ago. Woolworths uses Postilion’s Card Management solution to manage gift cards, which are gaining in popularity in South Africa in line with global trends. Woolworths - www.woolworths.co.za Postilion – www.postilion.com API is now offering “The MedeFile Card” to convenience stores, gas stations, independent pharmacies and heath food stores. MedeFile provides customers with a centralized, confidential electronic portfolio their entire medical history. The company says that each year many people die because medical professionals do not have enough information about their patients. API hopes to change that with The MedeFile Card. The MedeFile card will sell for $4.99 and membership is free for the first year. API - www.api123.com Communications Inc. and Leap Wireless International Inc., two providers of cheap, no-contract mobile-phone service, may be the next WalMart Stores Inc. As the U.S. economy teeters on the brink of a recession, consumers who can’t win credit approval at AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless are opting for pay-as-you-go plans that cost as little as 70 percent less, or $30 a month, for unlimited calling. MetroPCS, based in Dallas, forecasts a 38 percent surge in customers this year to 5.5 million. Analysts project a 21 percent gain at San Diego-based Leap to 3.46 million. Adults younger than 50 are more willing to give up Internet or TV service than part with mobile phones, according to Pew Research Center. Wal-Mart, the world’s biggest retailer, has gained 22 percent in six months as consumers flock to discount stores to save on necessities. The same trend may help lift MetroPCS, which has lost 30 percent since Sept. 30, and Leap, down 35 percent as the economy has slowed and consumer debt mounted. (MCI) is supplying a new marketing display to more than 1,600 Wal-Mart stores in the United States, reclaiming an often-overlooked piece of “real estate” in retail space. This deceptively simple display, which is about 2 feet tall by 5 inches square, wraps around the pole that shields the wires powering each cash register. The display serves a couple of purposes for Wal-Mart - first, it creates a unified home for a collection of financial service products such as credit cards and product care plans for large-ticket items and second, a way to create a tidy, uniform look at checkout lanes, according to MCI President Brian Cole.
